September, how I love thee...

I really believe that September (and possibly October, depending on what part of the country you are in) is a perfect month. In the South, it has finally started to cool down enough to begin to enjoy outdoor activities again, like running and eating outside without being devoured by mosquitoes. It has the heat of summer and the low humidity of fall and the increasingly cool nights where you can feel the chill of heavy autumn in the air.

Years ago, I always loved September because it was the start of the new school year and the slates were blank, so to speak, and everything was new. You hadn't gotten grades yet, there was less pressure and it was still great non-snowy weather at football games. Very important for when you are dancing at halftime in a short skirt... I used to look forward to browsing the the fall issues of Seventeen and YM so that I could see the latest fashions being worn by teen models (remember Niki and Krissy Taylor?).

Now I love September for the relatively steady, but non-crazy pace at work. Kids are done with needing physicals and get the typical back to school stuff like colds and the ever-lovely head lice (blechhhh), but they haven't started contracting the deep winter problems of serious respiratory infections. More importantly, I love the fall fashions, with all the phone book-sized "September issues" of Vogue, Elle and InStyle.

Here are my picks for fall essentials. BTW, is completely ridiculous to me that someone who wasn't even allowed to watch Cheers growing up (because it was too risque, naturally) is giving anybody advice on what to wear.  There is nothing revolutionary here, just a reiteration of how to transition your wardrobe to cooler months...

A good trench coat (I have another one in blue)...

Banana Republic trench on sale from last season

Tall boots (I can't get into the over the knee trend without thinking of Julia Roberts from Pretty Woman...)

Scored at DSW two seasons ago, still in great condition with perfectly aging leather

Opaque Tights...

 J.Crew

Heavier knits, tweeds and sweaters...

 J.Crew

Blazers...

J.Crew blazer and cami
Banana Republic jeans

Richer colors, like grey, plum, teal brown and burgundy...

 Banana Republic dress

What are you looking forward to wearing this fall?
