I have been dropping hints to my husband LIKE CRAZY that I "needed" a new camera for my birthday and that I would like to get it before July 4th, when my best college girlfriends are coming into town for the weekend with their husbands and kids. I think he was sick of me mooning over Consumer's Reports magazines for camera reviews and searching websites incessantly for the best price (which of course, he managed to beat anyway). So...ta da! Here is what I'm getting!
I was debating between Nikon D40, Nikon D60 and Canon XTi. We decided to go with the D60 because of the 10 megapixels (in case I ever wanted to blow up a picture to 2 feet x 3 feet - you never know when you need a life sized cutout of someone) and because the XTi has been around for a while and will likely be replaced by another entry level digital SLR soon.
I used to be a photography freak in college, so I can't wait to dust off some of my old lenses from my 35 mm Minolta SLR and try them out on my new one (especially the macro lens). I am now commencing with the happy dance from "Perfect Strangers". Eat your heart out, Balki Bartokomous.
We recently got the D90 with an 18-200 Nikkor lens and LOVE it!!! I still have no idea how to do anything with the camera, but the auto setting still looks amazing!!

We've had the D40 for about 18 months and love, love, love it! Congrats on the new baby! Can't wait to see some pics.
I have the D80 and I LOVE it--still learning as it is my 1st SLR but I am totally happy with it so far.
